Daron Acemoglu's neoliberal nightmare book.
Fellglow Keep's comments:
There never was a narrow corridor in Europe. No monopoly of violence ever existed from Barbarian times till Absolutism and Westphalia. Since then, Europe has been suffering a growing Leviathan in face of centralized nation-building and a growing welfare state.
Also typical of mainstream Economists for Acemoglu to read Hayek and strawman the ancap position, instead of reading the likes of Mises, Rothbard, or Hoppe. "Only power restrains power", yet Acemoglu can't recognize that that the Monopoly of Violence chooses to bow down to non-violent non-state institutions since it needs even a show of lip service. Only force restrains force, especially the Leviathan.
